How mail tracking works

For delivery tracking, Direct Mail Blitz leverages the USPS Intelligent Mail Barcode (IMb) service. Starting in 2013, the USPS requires mailers to print the Intelligent Mail Barcode on mail pieces to qualify for automation postage prices, that is any mail going out for less than the cost of a first class stamp.

Our software assigns a unique Intelligent Mail Barcode (IMb) to every contact in your mailing list and every piece of mail we process. Then, an Intelligent Mail Barcode (IMb) is printed on every piece of mail when it’s being addressed.

The USPS sends us all the raw data that was created by the barcode for each mail piece.

We analyze the raw data to determine the estimated and the actual delivery dates for each piece of mail.

Results are tracked and viewable in real time through the Mail Tracking dashboard making it easy to see attribution and determine return on investment.

When your direct mail enters the United States Postal Service mail stream, the IMb barcodes are scanned as they move through the high speed postal equipment so we can start tracking actual delivery dates immediately. For example, you can see how many pieces have been sent and the current status of each piece of mail.

You will have access to a Mail Tracking dashboard specifically for your direct mail campaign where you can login and see these results in real time:

  • When your mail is projected to be in mailboxes
  • When your mail is confirmed to be delivered to mailboxes
  • What percent of your mail has been delivered

You’ll be able to toggle between a Google map with pins where your mail was delivered and a bar graph showing delivery projections and actual delivery dates.
